Tax bracket formulas or references

I am trying to make a tax table type of spreadsheet for emplyees. I need to enter in M or S for Married or Single. I have all the formulas in place that comes up with an adjusted income. Now, the question is, how (or is it possible) to have a formula recognize single (S) or married (M) and refer to a few cells that I have enter numbers in. These numbers are the tax brackets. The married and single brackets are different. If the income falls in between the certain amounts, then they get a certain amount of percentage deducted off. Are these questions to small or too complicated for this message board? Let me know and I will check elsewhere, but I appriciate everyones time if anything. cpuxnut@yahoo.com if more info is needed and Thanks again

OKAY,

The good news is I am learning alot. Bad news is I'm just not catching on to solving my problems. I have applied the suggestions I have recieved and I am feeling that I did not explain enough info for you guys. And that is my fault. Anyone willing to give me an email address and I will give you a sampling of what I got on both or either of my problems.
Thanks for trying and bare with me!!!!
