subtracting/ adding dates

My goal is to determine out turnaround time for financial bid requests. We log in the receipt date and the sent out date, but I cannot format a cell with a formula that will subtract the dates to determine the turnaround days for the bid, and the cumulative turnaround for the month.

(sent out date) - (receipt date)
and format as a number will give you the number of days between the two dates.
