showing sum total instead of formula

I am having trouble getting the sum total to appear as a value. Instead of having the value appear, the formula appears in the box. I tried to turn off the formula by Ctrl-~ but it does not replace the formula with the sum total value. Running Office 2000 on Windows 2000. This problem does not occur with Office 2000 on Windows 98. Can anyone help me??

Is the cell in question formatted as Text. If so,
change it to a Number format and re-enter your
formula.
