question about formulas

I have 2 colums and I need to add a fomula to each one, controlling the values that will get. For example:
If A1 has a value lets say (X) then A2 can not be filled in and the opposite. This have to be done for both columns

Care to elaborate a bit more? Are you trying to enter values in these 2 columns which must be controlled?

BTW, A1 and A2 are in A. You probably meant to say A1 and B1. Right?
