formatting phone numbers

I have a list of numbers in general format that I want to look like phone numbers. When I go to formatting and change the format to special and phone number, nothing happens. But when I double click on the cell and then click somewhere else, it takes on the format. I have way too many phone numbers in the worksheet to do that to everyone. Any help ideas? Thanks...

put 1 in a cell. Copy it and paste special multiply over your phone numbers. Does this help?

You could also...
...select you list of phone numbers, choose
the Text to Columns... menu command and press
[ Finish ].

Text to Columns... is under the Data menu [nt]
