It seems to me that whilst you perform your filtering, it will tell you the pertinent records found.... ie 5 of 399 records found.
As soon as you exit your filtering chores and perform another task / function etc etc it will display "in filter mode" maybe to remind you that there is a certain range which is filtered and not an entire range of contiguous rows (ie in case you copy down or copy paste or whatever)
looks like it's just a reminder to you whislt it recognises you are not filtering any more
try picking a spreadhseet that you thought looked odd and just double click a spare cell into edit mode - the narrative should switch to that reminder "filter mode".... now switch back to your filtered columns, pick a column and select "filter : all" you will see ti changes back to something like 45 records from 2,785 as it knows you know the filter mode is on so turns off the reminder to a more useful results narrative

Thanks for the response Chris but in all my spreadsheets with the exception of two, the filtered number of items shows (i.e., 5 of 3495) but in the other two spreadsheets the total does not show up. It stated "calculating cells = 100%" then goes directly to the "filter mode" without identifying the total filtered items. Thus my delema.

Here's what's happening in a flash! After applying
a filter the "# of ## records found" is displayed
on the Status bar. Then your worksheet is
re-calculated replacing the above message with
"Calculated Cells %". Once re-calculation is
complete the "Filter Mode" message is displayed.
If you want the "# of ## records found" message
to be preserved set your calculation mode to
Manual.
Thanks Mark. We will see what happens but, why would, in the auto mode, the # of #### show when filtering in some columns but yet not show when filtering in other columns?
