AutoFilter giving limited results

I have a sheet of 8000+ records in which I would like use autofilter to quickly view groups of like records.
Unfortunately autofilter only displays the top 500 some-od values in the drop down list. Are there limits to how many values autofilter will display in this list?

Yes, there is a limit to the display. However, if you choose custom in the list and type in the data that you are looking for it will be there.

I tried to use autofilter by choosing custom with 6000 values, but I still can't see the filtered items. I think there is an upper limit where Autofilter failed anyhow.
