Sort Date column by month not year

I have a column of birthday dates formatted as 02/11/66,
I want to sort in month order so the spreadsheet starts with the Januarys
and ends with the Decembers.
I had no luck with Data/Sort/Options/First Key Sort order.
It still had them in oldest to youngest.
Am I missing something?

Helen, use this formula in an adjacent column and then sort on that column.
=Month(A1)
