Hello!

I'm in desperate need of help. I've spent way too much time trying to figure this one out. I have a spreadsheet that has 400 employees listed in column A with dates I need to grab from in column K. I have a 2nd spreadsheet that was not completely updated correctly so what I want to do is have Spreadsheet2 look on Spreadsheet1 for a name match and if it does match, input the date in column K. The problem I am running into is that let's say the name in a52 on spreadsheet1 may not be the same name in a52 on spreadsheet2. Is there a formula or macro I can use to search for the name no matter where it is in the spreadsheet and once found return a value from the matching name in another?

Example Spreadsheet 2:

Excel Facts

Create a Pivot Table on a Map
If your data has zip codes, postal codes, or city names, select the data and use Insert, 3D Map. (Found to right of chart icons).
You should be able to do a vlookup between the 2 files and pull over a specific column from the row that matches the name you are looking for. I would need more details (file names, etc, etc) to give you the exact line, but it would be something like:

=vlookup(a1,'[<file name>],<tab you want>'!$A:$K,11,false)

Thank you! I tried to get Vlookup to work on my own and failed miserably. :). I did have the data in two workbooks, but made them into one to save a little pain. I'm calling the spreadsheet "Nurse Review tracking 2011.xlsx". One tab is called "active" and the other is called "old". I would be pulling data from the "old" tab onto the "active" tab. So will this formula work even if let's say Sam1 is in cell a5 on the "active tab", but in cell a65 on the "old tab", but still input the data in K5 on the "active" tab?

Thanks sooo much!

Almost forgot... can you get it to say "No Review" if the cell in column K is blank?

In cell K1 put this:

=VLOOKUP(A1,active!A:B,11,FALSE)

but change the A:B to the full range of data in the active tab. You should be able to drag the formula down to the rest of the K column once that is working properly.

For the "No Review" part use:

=if(iserror(VLOOKUP(A1,active!A:B,11,FALSE))=true,"No Review",VLOOKUP(A1,active!A:B,11,FALSE))

Unfortunately it's not working. I'm getting a #ref! or #n/a no matter which tab I put it in. I'm also starting in A2 so I changed the formula to reference A2. =VLOOKUP(A2,Active!A:B,11,FALSE). Since I'm pulling data from the "old" tab, shouldn't it be =VLOOKUP(A2,Old!A:B,11,FALSE)? Unfortunately both ways I get an error message.

For the "No Review" part use:

=if(iserror(VLOOKUP(A1,active!A:B,11,FALSE))=true,"No Review",VLOOKUP(A1,active!A:B,11,FALSE))

It says "No Review" now, but it says it for all of cells... even if there is a date in column K on the "old" tab. It needs to pull the data (date) from column K on the "old" tab and place it in column K on the new tab where the names match in column A. The names will not always be in the same row on each tab. Sam might be in row 2 on the "old" tab, but may be in row 7 on the "new" tab.

This looks very close to what I need. Would you mind taking a look at this link?

Thanks so much!

Try this:

Note: with a small modification on the Buxtongt's formula.

I think that for vlookup to work, data must be alpha sorted vertically. "Sarah" cannot come before "Sam".

I'm fairly sure my head is going to pop off. :) Now I get a blank in the cells. I renamed my sheets back to Sheet1 and Sheet2 just for giggles because changing it in the formula didn't help, but neither did the rename of sheets.

Sheet2 has data on it that needs to go in Sheet1, but the data needs to match the names in both sheets no matter what cell they are in. Employees have come and gone since the creation of the first sheet so the names aren't going to be in the same cells.
