How can I get Excel's default date format to be m/d/yy (7/2/09) rather than d-mmm (2-Jul), so that when I enter "7/2" I get 7/2/09 rather than 2-Jul? Excel's Help says Excel's default date format should be whatever I have set for my Regional settings (mine are M/d/yy (7/2/09) for short date and ddd, MMM d, yyyy (Thu, Jul 2, 2009) for long date), but changing these has no effect on Excel's defaults.

Welcome to the Board!

I don't think you can change Excel to let you type 7/2 and it not enter as 7/2/09 unless you format the cell or column before entering it, but in case you didn't know you can enter a date in such as:

7/2/9

and it will fill the cell as 7/2/2009.

Not sure if that is of any help to you as you still have to type 2 more characters.

What I want to know is if there is a way to change Excel's default date format so that if I enter a date like "7/2" Excel will automatically display it in the m/d/yy (7/2/09) format instead of what apparently is Excel's default date format of d-mmm (2-Jul).

Its not possible as far as I am aware of and I have never found a way to make it change. Sorry probably not the answer you were hoping for.

Thanks for your help! I've been using Excel for a long time, and I know that, as capable as it is, there are some things I can't change. I hope this is something that can be changed, but if not, then that's the answer.
