I'd like to buy "VBA and Macros for Microsoft Excel 2007" but currently use Excel 2002. Will I be completely confused by the book's references to features that don't exist in my version?

I could buy the older version of the book but would like to avoid that since I'll probably upgrade Excel within the year.

Is the 2007 book completely different or mostly updated screenshots, etc...? For example, the older book has a section that points out that while the current version of Excel is (was) 2003, only the XML stuff in Ch 15 won't work with Excel 2002 and Excel 2000.

What does the 2007 book say about using it with 2002?

Thanks,
Ali

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Some features in Excel 2007 have been completely redesigned from the earlier versions: Charts, Pivot Tables, Conditional Formatting, to name a few.
If you have Excel 2007, are just learning VBA and have the earlier book version - you'd have a difficult time.
But - if you are an experienced programmer, even if it was from an earlier version, you'd probably have a better understanding of how to find the objects, arguments, etc that you need to adapt.
Similarly - if you buy the 2007 book and try to learn how to program from it in the older version - you would get confused.

The core - What's are objects, arguments, OOP, ranges - didn't change. Either book will teach the basics of programming. But if you're looking for a *reference* while programming, you'll need to stick to the version you're in.

Hi,

I have developed several VBA-applications in Excel 2003. I will be using Excel 2007 within a couple of weeks. For my 2003-programs I've used "Programming in Excel 2003" written by Curtis Frye as reference guide.

However, this doesn't provide me enough information on some advanced programming issues. Can anyone recommend me some Excel 2003 or (even better) 2007 books for developers? Your advice on this matter would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Board!

Unfortunately I can't speak to Bill's VBA books, but he and Tracy have done a great job from what I've heard.

Similarly I haven't checked John Walkenbach's Power Programming for 2007 yet, but if it's anything like his earlier work then I'd highly recommend it. See: www.j-walk.com

Hope that helps,

What do you consider "advanced programming issues?"
our book covers xml, pivot tables, programming Word, Access, etc.
is that advanced enough?

Thanks, I've ordered John Walkenbach's Excel 2007 library. This will help me out for a while ;).
