+= in Excel

Excel Facts

Get help while writing formula
Click the italics "fx" icon to the left of the formula bar to open the Functions Arguments dialog. Help is displayed for each argument.
When you go to enter a formula into a cell with parenthesis, you can hit the "plus sign" on the kepad quicker than the equal sign on the keyboard. It keeps the +=(15*15) in the cell. You can get rid of the plus sign if you like.

Hi, and welcome to the board!

Syntactically, it is incorrect for a formula. Which probably means it's text. The + sign can go after the = sign, but not before; at least not as a formula.

That's why I was curious to see the formula (if indeed it is a formula).

The + is reduntant.

Some people who still use or used Lotus 123 put a + in front of formulas to tell the program that you were entering a formula. Excel uses = instead, but has allowed the use of the + sign, I guess for the sake of attracting the Lotus users so they didn't necessarily have to change this habit.

Try entering a formula like +If(A1="',"","X") and press enter, now go back and look at the formula, you should see =+If...

In Excel, you should really just type =If(......
