hi

i need to make either a spreadsheet or database to record the results of a league. all the players registered with the league need to be inputted along with the teams registered. also i need to be able to put the results of each match in and calculate the league table along with player rankings.

which do people think is better to use access or excel? excel is easeir to calculate stats but access is easier for data entry

all suggestions welcome

If there's not a lot of players/data to be entered then use Excel. If you have thousands and thousands of players, use Access. Excel is great for data manipulation, but terrible for data storage. (well, maybe "innefficient" is a better adjective)

If data entry is really the only thing stopping you from using Excel, I would suggest one of three things.

1. Experiment with the built-in data form tool goto "Data|Form". (see help for more details)

2. Use j-walk's (free) Enhanced dataform v2:

3. Make your own data entry forms using VBA.

there are about 15 players per team and 8 teams in each division and 6 divisions so there is a fair bit of data to be entered

Use Excel. That's 720 records, but you need to calculate league tables as well. You're going to end up using Excel anyway. This way, you don't have to mess about with setting up a database and setting up a spreadsheet.
