search in address line

I used to use Joseph Rubin's board search add-in for excel when it suited me to do so. It appears that it performed a fairly simple set of commands. That is, open browser, put "blah" in address line.

The "blah" part worked for the old version of the board because your search term was in the address, i.e.:
http://www.mrexcel.com/board2/?term=search_term_from_excel&addterms=all&forum=all&search_username=&sortby=p.post_time+desc&searchboth=both&submit=Search&start=0
This does not work any more with the new board.

Now when I search the board directly, there doesn't seem to be the same kind of address line interaction with searches.

Do we still have this capability with a different syntax?

They're not 'visible' but this worked (Well, I have the PHP file, that way I know what the field name is)

http://www.mrexcel.com/board2/search.php?search_keywords=import%20AND%20text

for author you use

search_author

other options are:

search_terms (1 for ALL, 0 for any, altough I prefer to use the AND keyword)
return_chars (Number of characters to return, default = 200)
search_cat (Category number to serach, but I don't think its working, still trying to figure out why !)
search_forum (Forum number, same problem as category)

I think that should be the ones you need...

I'm not sure if that will work with the new version of the board

When you use the search function now, you don't get anything in the address line but http://www.mrexcel.com/board2/search.php?mode=results

which just takes you back to the search screen when clicked ::shrug::
Can't believe this ! I beat Kristy in a web problem.... man, something's wrong with the world these days !

Thanks for your help! Here is why I was asking:

Check out http://www.dqsd.net

Here's a description:
"A minimal little search textbox for your Windows Deskbar. Type in some search terms, and you launch a web search. It can launch searches on Google, Yahoo, Merriam-Webster, Switchboard, Bloomberg, Accuweather, CNN, Ebay, Amazon, and more than 100 other services. It also has other useful built-in features like a search history, calendar, and an expression calculator."

I like it becuase I don't have to open IE before searching google, and you can go right to specific sites and search before ever opening IE.

I use it all the time for site-specific searches like this message board.
Now, for this site, I just added
xl|http://www.mrexcel.com/board2/search.php?search_keywords=%s|Mr Excel Message Board
to the localaliases.txt file.
Then, when you want to search this board, type "xl import AND text" or whatever you are searching for.

I think you can get it to work with netscape as well.
